THORNDIKE — Fire destroyed a house Saturday morning on the East Thorndike Road, displacing the man who was home at the time of the blaze.
Thorndike Fire Chief Shawn Bristol said the cause of the fire, which was still smoking Sunday morning, was not known. The blaze was not considered suspicious, according to the chief.
“Being that the house is a total loss, we aren’t going to be able to determine the cause,” Bristol said. “We have ideas. It may have stemmed from a wood stove, but that’s not going to be determined.”
Firefighters from Thorndike, Unity, Troy, Albion, Burnham, Brooks, Liberty and Montville responded to the fire, which was reported at about 10 a.m.
Bristol said he was in the process of organizing assistance from the American Red Cross and the community, including many neighbors who had offered to help the house’s owner, Stephen Fowler.
“Ultimately,” Bristol said, “my goal is to get a fundraiser set up for this individual in one way, shape or form.”
