The University of Maine at Farmington men’s soccer team took SUNY Polytechnic Institute to the limit in the North Atlantic Conference championship game on Saturday.
Ultimately, the Beavers fell one shot short.
The Wildcats topped the Beavers 6-5 in penalty kicks to win the title in Marcy, New York. With the win, SUNY-Poly (14-2-4) gets an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
UMF, playing in its first NAC title game since joining the conference in 2003, falls to 11-4-2.
The Beavers struck first, with a goal from Cade McHugh that gave UMF a 1-0 lead in the first half. The Wildcats answered back in the second half with a goal from Wakeley Banker on a penalty kick, which tied the game 1-1, where it remained until the end of regulation.
After two scoreless overtimes, the game went to penalty kicks. Jimmy Pelletier, Yusuf Mohamed, Silas Mohlar, Aric Belanger and William Dowse made successful kicks for the Beavers. Banker, Noah Fagnani, Edward Greene, Zach Westadt and Andy Zhinin made successful kicks for SUNY-Poly.
Finally, a shot by McHugh was stopped by Wildcats goalie Daragh Foley, and Matthew McCord made the next shot for SUNY-Poly, giving the Wildcats the title.
CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 1, COLBY 0: Jake Creus’ goal at 89:19 proved the difference for the Camels, who beat the Mules in a New England Small College Athletic Conference semifinal in in New London, Connecticut.
Rye Jaran and Bruce Doyle had assists for Connecticut College (14-3).
Noah Jackson had five saves for Colby (7-8-1).
WOMEN’S SOCCER
MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY 2, CAZENOVIA 0: Suzanne Wooldridge and MacKenzie Carter each tallied goals for the Mariners to beat the Wildcats for the NAC championship in Castine.
Carter had an assist, while goalie Bess MacArthur had two saves for Maine Maritime (11-6-0), who will get an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Meghan McCarthy had five saves for Cazenovia (10-11-0).
FIELD HOCKEY
BOWDOIN 3, TUFTS 1: Manveer Sandhu, Georgia Coetzer and Abby Bashaw all tallied goals for the Polar Bears in a win over the Jumbos in a NESCAC semifinal in Middlebury, Vermont.
With the win, the Polar Bears move on to the NESCAC championship at noon on Sunday, playing against Middlebury (17-0).
Faith Jennings had two assists for Bowdoin (14-3), while Maddie Ferrucci had eight saves.
Reegan McCluskey had the lone goal for Tufts (13-4).
HUSSON 1, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 0: Allie Drew’s goal proved to be the difference, as the Eagles beat the Beavers in a New England Collegiate Conference semifinal at Thomas College in Waterville.
Kimmie Goddard had six saves to earn the shutout for Husson (8-7). With the win, the Eagles move on to play Thomas in the NECC final on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Katelyn Rouleau had three saves for UMF. The Beavers fall to 7-8.
FOOTBALL
TUFTS 26, COLBY 21: Devin Marrocco ran for 67 yards on three carries and had a touchdown for the Mules, who fell to the Jumbos in Medford, Massachusetts.
Matt Hersch was 15 of 27 passing for 242 yards with a touchdown and interception for Colby (3-5).
Michael Berluti was 26 of 33 passing for 272 yards and two touchdowns for Tufts (3-5).
HUSSON 24, SALVE REGINA 10: Garrett Poussard ran for 106 yards on 26 carries to lead the Eagles to a win over the Seahawks in Bangor.
Nic Visser was 25-35 passing for 244 yards and two touchdowns for Husson (7-2). Tyler Halls had eight receptions for 82 yards.
Jack Maguire was 16-29 for 223 yards passing with a touchdown for Salve Regina (8-2).
