The Kennebec Historical Society’s December presentation will feature Author Mac Smith who will discuss his book “Maine’s Hail to the Chief.” The presentation is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Christ Episcopal Church, 2 Dresden Ave., Gardiner.
Smith will briefly discuss all 20 presidential visits to Maine but will concentrate on the longer visits to the Augusta/Gardiner area. This includes the 11th president of the United States, James Knox Polk, 18th president Ulysses S. Grant, and 26th president Theodore Roosevelt.
There also will be discussion of the reaction in the state’s capital to the death of President John F. Kennedy.
A Navy veteran of the first Gulf War and former reporter for The Bar Harbor Times, Smith lives in the Stockton Springs village of Sandy Point. He also is the author of “Mainers on the Titanic” and “Peyton Place Comes Home to Maine: The Making of the Iconic Film.”
His fourth book, “Siege at the Statehouse” is due to be released next May.
The presentation is free to the public, with donations accepted.
