AUGUSTA — A Waterville couple on Tuesday pleaded guilty in court to trafficking in “eightballs” of cocaine.

Under an arrangement recommended by attorneys, they will alternate spending time in jail so one person can remain home and take care of a 4-year-old child.

“They share a child and are very much in love,” said defense attorney Charles Ferris, who represented both of them. “They certainly are not people used to being in court. Both are pretty embarrassed and shamed about the whole ordeal.”

Misty L. Doyon, 32, of Waterville, admitted selling an eightball of cocaine on two separate occasions in June. An eightball is common slang for about an eighth of an ounce, or 3.5 grams, of cocaine.

Joshua P. Michaud, 35, of Waterville pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful trafficking in cocaine in connection with the same incidents June 9 and June 15, in Winslow.

The buys were made by a confidential informant who was wearing a wire to record the transactions and who purchased the cocaine each time with $250 in marked cash, according to court records.

Assistant District Attorney James Mitchell Jr. said Michaud admitted dealing cocaine and using Doyon to carry out the transactions.

Doyon also pleaded guilty to a charge of operating after suspension on July 22, in Augusta.

She was sentenced to six years in prison, with all but nine months suspended, and two years of probation; she and Michaud also agreed to forfeit $1,000 to the state. Doyon was fined $800 and ordered to pay up to $1,150 in restitution, an amount to which Michaud also must contribute.

Justice Nancy Mills accepted the guilty pleas in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Doyon was sentenced immediately; however, Mills agreed to postpone a final sentencing hearing for Michaud until after Doyon serves her initial nine months behind bars.

Mills was told Michaud’s proposed sentence — recommended by both attorneys — is six years in prison with all but two years suspended and two years of probation. He also faces $400 in fines.
