AUGUSTA — An Augusta man who allegedly started a fire after intentionally setting off fireworks inside his apartment was recently indicted on arson and other charges by a Kennebec County grand jury.
Gerald Scott Stackpole, 45, was arrested July 1, 2021, after a fire inside a Jefferson Street apartment where he was living. Investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshal reported the blaze started when Stackpole intentionally set off fireworks in the apartment.
Other tenants of the building extinguished the flames using fire extinguishers and a garden hose, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Stackpole left the scene, according to a press release, and was eventually located by Augusta police officers, who assisted with the investigation.
No one was injured in the fire.
The arson charge Stackpole was indicted on is a Class A charge, punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
Stackpole was also indicted on two other charges, both from the same day as the alleged arson. Those charges are domestic violence criminal threatening, a Class C charge which alleges he intentionally or knowingly placed a woman in fear of imminent bodily injury, and endangering the welfare of a child, a Class D charge which alleges he recklessly endangered the health, safety or welfare of three children, two of them 6-years old, one 10.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt but indicates enough evidence exists for formal charges to proceed toward trial.
