AUGUSTA — Chad Foye said he learned a lot when he coached the Cony High School hockey team from 2000-07.

He’s eager to see what his second stint with the Rams will bring.

“I missed it,” said Foye, 46, of Chelsea. “I’m really looking forward to doing it again.”

Cony athletic director Paul Vachon said Friday that he will recommend Foye as the next Cony coach when the school board meets again in two weeks.

Foye will replace Bruce Dostie, who resigned last month citing family and education commitments.

“He will be our coach,” Vachon said. “I can guarantee it. He has the experience. With him knowing the kids already, it was an easy choice.”

Foye, who teaches social studies at Cony, previously coached the Maine Moose junior hockey team for three seasons.

The Moose didn’t field a junior hockey league team last season.

Foye said he was interested in the Cony position when he learned Dostie would resign.

“It was something I thought a lot about,” Foye said. “I wasn’t looking all that hard, but when this opportunity came up, I thought it would be good.”

Vachon said the position was advertised “in-house.”

“We knew we had some very good candidates in our school system,” he said. “With the lateness of the (Dostie) resignation, and in our current situation, we thought he would be the right choice. Even if we had an all-out search I don’t know if we would’ve had anyone stand out beyond Chad. He just has tremendous experience.”

Foye takes over a program that’s struggled in recent seasons. The Rams finished 33-44-0 in four seasons under Dostie.

Furthermore, the Rams will skate at Kents Hill this season after their previous home, the Kennebec Ice Arena, collapsed in March.

“We have to see what we’ve got,” Foye said. “I saw a few games last year, but I don’t know how much. I know Bruce did a good job last year, and they did a lot of things well. I have some ideas of how I see the team will develop. I’m looking forward to getting going.”

Vachon added that Cony assistant Shawn Johnson will return this winter.
