WATERVILLE — A Waterville man was arrested Sunday night after leading police on a chase on West River Road and refusing to stop, according to Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey.
Petr Ostaltsov, 41, of 23B Webb Road, was charged with operating under the influence, criminal speed and refusing to stop for a police officer after the chase, which started at about 10 p.m., Rumsey said Monday.
Sgt. William Bonney was driving north on West River Road at that time and saw a vehicle approaching him, going south at 76 miles per hour, Rumsey said.
The speed limit in that area, near Crestwood Drive and Thomas College, is 45, Rumsey said.
“Sgt. Bonney activated his emergency equipment, including lights and siren, turned and pursued the vehicle to stop it,” Rumsey said. “The vehicle failed to stop for him and the driver turned into Village Green Road.”
The vehicle finally stopped at the intersection of Village Green Road and Ryan Drive, south of Webb Road, Rumsey said. It was about 1/2 mile from where Bonney started pursuing the vehicle.
“The operator stopped the vehicle voluntarily,” he said. “Sgt. Bonney made contact with him and took him into custody.”
Ostaltsov told Bonney that he had not seen the officer behind him, Rumsey said.
Ostaltsov was taken to the police station, where he was released on $2,000 unsecured bail, he said. He is scheduled to appear in Waterville District Court at 1 p.m. Jan. 17, according to Rumsey.
