The next Music for Mavis concert will feature Castlebay with Nick Apollonio at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Gazebo, at 98 Mathews Way, in Turner; rain or shine.
Since 1986 Castlebay has been weaving together Maine’s nautical and British Isles legacies transporting their audience through time and across the Atlantic. Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history, legend and experience into their personable performances of traditional and original songs, supported with Celtic harp, 12-string guitar, fiddle and woodwinds.
Nick Apollonio, a well-known lutier and ship woodworker, has been a fixture on the Penobscot Bay folk scene for many years. He is a skilled player of cittern, fiddle, and guitar. In addition to his own performances he has accompanied too many folk luminaries to list. Apollonio has written and performed numerous songs and tunes, many of which have been recorded by other artists.
Julia Lane, Fred Gosbee, and Nick Apollonio have periodically performed as a trio since the 1990s. Their vocal and instrumental skills, individually and in combination, weave melodic textures reminiscent of Celtic knot work.
