The Common Ground Fair once again has failed Mainers by continuing to allow smoking. As a longtime MOFGA member I am embarrassed. As a physician I am incredulous that an organization that boasts values of “ethical decisions grounded in science-based information” could so blatantly ignore science.

There is no justification to continue to allow smoking at the fair. When smoking bans went into effect for bars and restaurants, owners feared economic reprisals. In fact the opposite occurred. The science supports no smoking at the fair. Economic history supports no smoking at the fair.

MOFGA should be a leader in supporting the health and welfare of all fair attendees.
