AUGUSTA — Dom Napolitano showcased his versatility for the Cony football team on Friday night.
Napolitano, a senior, scored three touchdowns — two rushing and a 35-yard interception return on defense — to lead Cony to a 32-14 victory over Brewer at Fuller Field.
“It’s a great win,” Napolitano said. “(Brewer) is a physical football team. This was a great test.”
It was the second straight win for the Rams (3-2), continuing a surge of momentum that began with a 27-10 home victory week against Windham.
Napolitano’s interception set the tone for Cony. On Brewer’s first drive, quarterback Ryder Goodwin took a shot down the field. But Napolitano jumped in front of the pass and took off down the sideline for the touchdown.
“It was a fun play,” Napolitano said. “I read the quarterback, saw his eyes on the pass. From there, I just ran as fast as I could (to make the play).”
“It was a nice play by Dom,” Cony head coach B.L. Lippert added. “He’s proving to be one of the more dynamic players in the league. He’s got good feet when he runs the ball. Defensively, he’s around the ball when it’s in the air. He’s a valuable player for us and we’re thrilled to have him.”
Napolitano did his part on offense as well, as he was 10 of 14 passing for 86 yards while rushing for 58 yards on nine carries. He had help on the ground from running back Caden Schleis-Hooyman, who ran for 69 yards on 15 carries, scoring two touchdowns.
Cony’s defense met Brewer’s physicality all evening, with Jaden Geyer and Jon Lettre among players who recorded sacks. Jasper Parrilli had an interception for the Rams.
“(Brewer) was physical with us, but we did a good job (on defense), bend but don’t break,” Lippert said. “We were able to get some stops in the red zone a few times and keep them out of the end zone. It was a nice job by the defense.”
Brewer (1-4) had its struggles with penalties throughout the game, but showed a hard-charging ground game, led by senior running back Cameron Hughes, who collected 78 rushing yards on 22 carries and touchdown. Running back Jaxon Gross added 52 yards rushing on six carries and had a touchdown for the Witches.
“I was proud of the way our kids came to play today,” Brewer head coach Scott Flagg said. “Our kids played tough, they played physical. Mistakes really hurt us. Penalties were definitely something that we really have to look at cleaning up, and just a couple of big plays that didn’t go our way.”
