WILTON — The Wilton Water Department will hold a public hearing on a proposed nearly 20% water rate increase at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Town Office.
The overall hike is proposed at 10% for Jan. 1, 2023, and an additional 9.86% for Jan. 1, 2024, Town Manager Perry Ellsworth said.
It must be approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission before taking effect.
If approved, there would be a 9.12% increase proposed for residential, commercial, industrial, and public authorities for the first year, and another 10.01% hike in 2024. A 9.13% increase is proposed for private fire protection and a 12.60% increase is proposed for public fire protection in 2023 and a 10% increase for each in 2024.
The overall increase is intended to bring in a total of about $124,265, with $59,609 of it to be raised in 2023 and $64,656 in 2024.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission sets the formula for public fire protection rates.
The rates have not been adjusted since 2020, according to a notice.
