Greater Portland tied for second place in a survey of regions in the United States with the strongest expected third-quarter hiring.

According to a survey of 18,000 companies conducted by employment services firm ManpowerGroup, 29 percent of companies in Portland, South Portland and Biddeford expect to hire more employees from July to September, and 65 percent of firms expect to maintain current staff levels.

Six percent expect they will cut staff during the period.

Nationwide, 20 percent of firms expected to increase staff levels during the third quarter, and 69 percent expect no change during the period, according to the survey. Eight percent of firms nationwide expect they will cut staff.

Grand Rapids and Wyoming, Mich., scored number one on the ManpowerGroup survey, with 30 percent of firms expecting to hire more employees.

The Portland region tied for second place with Asheville, N.C.
