I found the article regarding Central Maine Power Co.’s osprey nest removal in the June 27 edition of the Kennebec Journal intriguing.
It seems that a large company can find a way around the migratory waterfowl protections by saying that the ospreys are not building in their natural habitat. I don’t know how mere birds are supposed to know that these nice “snags” are not natural. I don’t suppose CMP put up any “keep away” signs for them to follow.
At any rate, if the nests must be removed, I would hope that CMP would be compassionate enough to wait until after the nesting season, at the very least, and preferably until the fall migration. It also would be really exceptional if CMP would leave some of the poles with platforms for future nestings.
