LEWISTON — A Maine high school is telling parents of 87 students they shared a classroom this spring with a teenager infected with tuberculosis.

Lewiston High School Principal W. Gus LeBlanc sent a letter to parents saying health officials are recommending that the exposed students be tested for infection. Letters were also sent to nine faculty members.

The infected teenager has been out of school since May 27.

Dr. Sheila Pinette, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, says tuberculosis is a curable disease and it’s rare that it’s spread by infected people.

An informational meeting is planned for next week.

Testing will take place July 25 and Aug. 1 at the high school. The Sun Journal says students will need to return two to three days later to receive results.
