Central Mainers attend Scout Day at Fenway

Hundreds of Scouts from all over New England made their way April 30 to Fenway Park in Boston, including some from central Maine, for Scout Day with the Boston Red Sox. The Yawkey Way sluggers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 7-1.

“We eat, sleep and breathe baseball in this family, so it was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to be around other Scouts and watch the Red Sox,” said Meghan Giroux of Winslow, the mother of Bear Cub Elliot Giroux and Tiger Cub Simon Giroux, according to a news release from Chuck Mahaleris, district chairman for the Kennebec Valley District of Scouting.

The Cubs are members of Winslow Pack 445.

Venture Crew 2713 Advisor Shelly Connolly of Pittsfield said, “One of our scouts earned Venture Rank. The rest were there for a fun day. We had a total of 10 in our group. Since Scouting is a family affair, we even had grandparents with us.”

Troop 401 from Sidney also had some Scouts and leaders in attendance at the game to watch as Connor Wong hit a two-run homer. The Scouts cheered when Alex Verdugo singled home a pair of runs.

“This was the first time several of our group members visited Fenway,” Winthrop Troop 604 Scoutmaster Smanatha Remington said. The troop brought 10 adults and seven youth. “By itself, that is a memorable experience. This was a fun day for the Troop and Pack to go to Fenway. One Cub Scout completed a requirement. Plus, the Red Sox hit two home runs and won. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.”
