OAKLAND — A fourth quarter goal by sophomore forward Sophia Ventimiglia led the Messalonskee field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Skowhegan on Monday night at Veterans Field.
“It feels nice, (beating Skowhegan) has honestly been a goal of mine since I’ve been here, and this is my third year,” said Messalonskee head coach Katie Brann. “It’s a big milestone. It’s just nice to see the girls that have been with me the last two or three years, to see them work toward that goal today and reach that.”
Messalonskee improved to 3-1, while Skowhegan, which was No. 1 in the Class A North standings, fell to 4-1. It’s the first loss for the River Hawks since Nov. 6, 2021, when they fell 4-1 to Cheverus in the Class A state championship game at Cony High School in Augusta. It was Messalonskee that gave Skowhegan its last loss in regular season play, a 2-1 win in overtime over the River Hawks on Sept. 7, 2017.
Ventimiglia scored her goal with less than nine minutes remaining in play, shortly after a Messalonskee timeout. Chloe Michaud was credited with an assist on the play.
“We were definitely hanging with them at that point,” Brann said. “Honestly, (half the reason) for the timeout was, we needed a break. We made a few positional changes there at the end to see if we could try to put it away in regulation. We really didn’t want overtime. Thankfully, that kind of worked out for us.”

BOYS SOCCER
MT. ABRAM 2, MONMOUTH ACADEMY 0: Two second-half goals lifted the Roadrunners (5-0) over the Mustangs (4-1-1) in a showdown of unbeaten Mountain Valley Conference teams in Strong.
Ash Rollins and Killian Pillsbury scored for Mt. Abram. Both goals were set up by Morgan Thibodeau.
Roadrunners goalie Logan Dube made two saves, while Monmouth’s Ezekial Delorme stopped four shots.
FOOTBALL
TELSTAR 34, MOUNT VIEW 0: Telstar rolled to its first victory of the season, shutting out Mt. View in 8-man football Small School South division action.
Telstar coach Tim O’Connor said that the Rebels (1-2) have improved through the first three weeks of the season, and they showed it in several facets of the game in Monday’s contest, which was rescheduled from Saturday due to the anticipated weather from Hurricane Lee.
The defense, led by Cruze Kimball and Hunter Koskela, blanked the Mustangs (0-3). O’Connor said Kimball and Koskela had a few sacks each and both were in on several tackles.
“They were stellar on the corners,” O’Connor said.
