The hype of Victor Wembanyama has caught everyone’s attention (“NBA notebook: Spurs’ rookie Wembanyama showing he’s worth all the hype,” Nov. 3). Wembanyama is a player who can do it all: shoot, assist, and handle the ball. What more could you want from a player? Would the fact that he is 7-foot-4 change your idea of the player he is? Yes, he is a player over 7 feet tall producing unthinkable statistics.
Does this change the dynamic of the NBA? As we have seen over the years these players towering over 7 feet tall have become the face of their team. We can see this from Kevin Durant, Nikola Jokic, and Joel Embiid. The players who stand taller than the rest of the players are the one-stop-shop for all the action on that court. You want defense and blocks? They can do that. You want offensive dominance? They can do that. You want continuous double doubles? They can do that too. These skyscraping “do it all” players are overpowering the league and Victor Wembanyama is the newest member of this group.
What does this mean for the future of the draft and incoming players? We can imagine NBA teams are going to take notice of this trend and change their mindset of the draft. Someone to lookout for that fits this criteria is Cooper Flagg, the Maine player. He is a young player who could become the next Victor Wembanyama or Kevin Durant. It will be interesting to see how his career at Duke unfolds.
