NEWCASTLE — The Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association will host an Ice Cream Social from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Harriet Bird Community Center across from SVCA headquarters, 624 Sheepscot Road. The free event will highlight Conservation Crunch (a new flavor of ice cream created by Lears Old Fashioned Ice Cream to celebrate SVCA’s 45th anniversary year) and several other Lears ice cream flavors. Activities for children will include the return of the “Salmon Runs”. Races around the ball field will be for “Smolts” ages 6-10 and “Fry” ages 5 and younger with ribbons awarded to the top five in each race. There will also be fun races such as egg and three-legged races for all ages.
Amy Campbell, of Knox Lincoln Beekeepers, will bring a display of native bees and information on how to help these insects. There are 260 or so species of native bees that are vital to the pollination of all of our flowers, fruits and vegetables. In recent years several species of mites have invaded the United States that have killed nearly all wild honey bee hives across the country. The need for managed bee hives has never been greater than it is right now.
