University of Maine at Farmington announced the appointment of a dean from Maryland to serve as the Farmington university’s new provost.
Joseph P. McGinn is UMF’s provost and vice president of academic affairs starting the coming school year, according to a press release from the school.
As provost, McGinn will head academic life at UMF, leading the university’s acadmic and research programs.
Foster said McGinn “brings an impressive combination of intellectual savvy and leadership experience” to the school.
“I am honored and excited to be a part of UMF’s tremendous legacy as the birthplace of public higher education in Maine,” said McGinn, in the release.
McGinn came to UMF from Towson University in Maryland, where he was dean of the honors college and a professor of philosophy since 2011.
“Thoughout his career, he has been committed to the development of the student as a whole person, successfully contributing to a wide range of programs, co-curricular initiatives and administrative support to encourage and showcase student engagement in all forms of scholarship and learning,” said the release.
Before Towson, he was director of the global honors program and professor of philosophy at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania and assistant professor of philosophy and humanities at Penn State-Harrisburg.
In addition to his background as an administrator and an educator, McGinn had experience with graduate and undergraduate programs and policies, curriculum development and assessment, professional development for faculty, enrollment management, budget management and faculty recruitment.
McGinn was a Commonwealth Scholar at Edinburgh University in Scotland. He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at Penn State University, a master’s degree in philosophy at the University of Waterloo in Ontario and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history at the University of Manitoba.
