SKOWHEGAN — The Skowhegan Free Public Library is installing a fire protection system to ensure the safety of their patrons, according to a Skowhegan Free Public Library press release.

Library Director Dale Jandreau said in the release that safety of the patrons was foremost in the minds of the Library Trustees when deciding to install the building wide system.

The wet and dry pipe system is being installed by the firm of Dean & Allyn, Inc. The building-wide system, which is installed from the cellar to the attic, is projected to be completed by Aug. 31. Installation of the system will ensure patrons have plenty of time to exit the building in case of fire, and will also provide fire protection to the structure 24 hours a day.

The Library Trustees, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture, Barba and Wheelock Architects, Maine Historic Preservation Commission, the Maine State Fire Marshall’s Office, Dean & Allyn, and the Town of Skowhegan spent months on the planning of the project. Funding for the project was made possible by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, and monies raised by fundraising.

Other health and safety renovations to the 125 year old structure are pending, as monies are raised. Donations to help with future renovations may be sent to the library, 9 Elm St. or visit skowhegan.lib.me.us.
