It has been said that the true measure of character is how one acts when nobody is watching.

When I served as Sen. Susan Collins’ legislative director, I was amazed by the time and attention she devoted to issues with no visibility in Maine. Her staffers quickly learned that even when there were no political points to gain or lose, it was critical to the senator not only that she vote but that she vote wisely.

Why is this important? The only cure for the malaise that afflicts Washington lies with elected officials who, although surrounded by cynicism, are able to retain their respect for the institution in which they serve and their dedication to the people they represent, and Collins tops that list.

And for those cynics inclined to dismiss this letter as driven by partisan politics, I voted for the Democrat in the last 13 presidential elections.
