Our state of Maine would be better off financially if Gov. Paul LePage had not twice vetoed against Medicaid expansion.
Medicaid expansion would have put a million dollars into the Maine economy every day, seven days every week. Gov. LePage’s refusal causes hospitals to lose money on charity care, which Medicaid expansion would help pay for.
All of us face inflated prices as hospitals must make up for the charity care losses that Gov. LePage made happen.
I asked my legislator reasons for refusing Medicaid expansion. His entire reply was: “Millions of dollars in, billions out.”
He gave no idea of what would cost us a thousand times more than what we would take in. Nor have I heard any specific reason to refuse Medicaid expansion other than betting the federal government might stop its promised reimbursements. Highly unlikely.
As governor, Mike Michaud would have better sense.
