GARDINER — A home is uninhabitable after a small Sunday fire forced firefighters to rip through an interior wall.

Gardiner Fire Chief Al Nelson said a fire was reported at a small, beige two-story home at 94 West St. just after 3:20 p.m on Sunday. When firefighters got there, they determined that the fire started in a first-floor wall, which they ripped open.

The blaze was under control within a half-hour, Nelson said, but much of the first floor has “significant” smoke and water damage. He said the American Red Cross of Maine was contacted to provide temporary housing for the residents.

The house is owned by Lorraine Pushard of Anson, according to city records. Gardiner’s department responded along with Augusta, Togus, Pittston, Farmingdale and Randolph firefighters.
