A presidential visit is long remembered by a community. In 1955, Gov. Edmund Muskie welcomed President Dwight Eisenhower on his fishing trip to Maine. In 1963, Gov. John Reed shared the stage with President John Kennedy at the University of Maine.
When the Obama family vacationed in Maine, no governor welcomed them. This is not surprising because Gov. Paul LePage had previously told his supporters that Obama could “go to hell.” Even more disturbing was the fact that his supporters cheered this statement.
Paul LePage and I attended Husson College from 1967 to 1971. We served together as Student Senate officers. However, his behavior as governor has been a national embarrassment. It is time to restore dignity to the office by electing Mike Michaud, a man who has demonstrated a capacity to work across the aisle both in Maine’s state Senate and in the U.S. Congress.
