The vandalism of Sen. Susan Collins’ Biddeford office should be a moment of clarity in this U.S. Senate race. Somebody spray-painted the door with a degrading, sexist slur, and a disturbing number of people online have applauded it.
That kind of politics doesn’t care about fixing Maine’s problems; it cares only about winning the fight, using whatever illegal or criminal means available.
Troy Jackson, and the national Democratic establishment backing his campaign, should condemn this clearly and without qualification. Silence, or a vague statement about “heated rhetoric on both sides,” will tell the voters all they need to know about the kind of campaign we can expect over the coming weeks.
In her nearly 30 years of serving the people of Maine in the Senate, Sen. Collins has found common ground in her diligent and unwavering advocacy of the people in our great state. I know she will not be intimidated by the reprehensible tactics being undertaken by her adversaries — and neither should Maine voters.
