In a recent speech, Gov. Paul LePage said that he is going to war to pass his tax reform plan. In any war, the innocents are the people who suffer and die. LePage’s war will be no different.

The highest income earners, who arguably use the most services and infrastructure paid for by taxes, will see the first decreases in their taxes. Years from now, the average guy will seeing no decrease in his taxes, but quite the opposite.

We have used graduated tax systems in the United States for more than 100 years. Over the last six decades, the taxes on wealthy people have declined substantially while odious loopholes and tax shelters have been created. A fair tax plan would be one where we all pay the same taxes without loopholes.

LePage’s tax plan, as most of his agenda, is pure chicanery fueled by a blind right-wing conservative ideology with no basis in truth or reality. His tactics are dictatorial. Ideologues and dictators have no place in Maine government. The Maine people deserve honest, thoughtful, compassionate, unbiased and equitable legislation.

If LePage wants to go to war, perhaps it should be a war with his conscience.
