PITTSFIELD — Cassandra Miller, of Pittsfield, a senior at Maine Central Institute, has been selected to receive the 2015 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and school citizenship, according to a news release from Headmaster Christopher Hopkins.
“Cassie has demonstrated during her four years at Maine Central Institute a remarkable progression and growth in all areas of school life,” Hopkins noted in presenting the award to Miller. “Her character and hard work have resulted in outstanding academic and athletic success. She demonstrates unfailing kindness towards others combined with a tenacity and competitiveness that come not at the expense of others but rather serve to inspire them. She is the quintessential servant-leader, devoting selfless time to support her peers, guide and encourage younger students and athletes, and she has assumed some of the highest leadership positions at MCI not by seeking them for personal gain or attention but because the adults and students in the community respond so eagerly to the example she sets.”
Miller is one of the top 10 students in her class. She has been a member of the field hockey, basketball, outdoor track and softball teams, serving as captain of field hockey both her junior and senior years. In addition, Miller is a four-year member of the band/pep band, Student Council and Key Club, where she served as secretary her junior and senior years. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Captains Club, Kindness Krew and Student Leadership Committee, according to the release.
Miller is the daughter of Anne and Edward Miller, of Pittsfield.
Miller, Hopkins and other award winners and their principals will attend an honors luncheon Saturday, April 11, at at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. The honors luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the association.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
