AUBURN – Even at this time of year, it’s apparent why this neighborhood is called Garden Circle. Partly because of the long, rambling circle of road along which perhaps a dozen and a half houses are dotted. But mostly because the enclave, although barely a convenient five minutes from U.S. Route 202 and Maine Turnpike Exit 75, is pleasantly woodsy and nicely private; quiet; much visited by wildlife, and a haven for songbirds.

Built in 1988, this oversized Cape enjoys its own garden of a .71-acre lot, as the accompanying in-season photos illustrate, and is well screened by woods out back, where there’s a two-level deck ideal for warm-weather entertaining and relaxing. Access to the deck is from one of the home’s finest spaces: a sunken, 370-square foot family room with lofty cathedral ceiling and a gas stove on a circular brick hearth. Two steps up, through French doors, is the cook’s kitchen, which has a delightful custom hutch, and whose black appliances include both Jenn-air range and wall oven.

The formal dining room, at the front of the house, has its own custom built-in for plates, and a bay window (casement) with plant shelf. Floors are hardwood.

Off the hall, there’s an office/sitting room that was originally the nursery, has recently served as a breakfast room, and could be the home’s fifth bedroom. Its closet has handy built-in shelving, and this cozy room with a backyard view even has its own nickname: “the snug.”

Farther down the hall is the guest suite, or first-level master suite: big bedroom with a pair of double closets, and a full bathroom (one of three) that includes laundry in an enclosure.

On the upper level, down a hallway with a wall of built-in shelving, the master suite occupies the north wing; both bedroom and bath are spacious, and have skylights. The back bedroom, which has double closets, is served by a full bath with oversized shower enclosure. Down the hall, the huge end bedroom (two double closets) serves beautifully as a bright office.

The full, two-level basement of more than 1,200 square feet has excellent ceiling height, all the storage/workshop space one could want, and a pair of 275-gallon oil tanks.
