A Carthage man remained in jail Tuesday on felony domestic violence charges after he allegedly assaulted his wife and claimed that he “had a plan” if she left, police said.
On Friday, four deputies and three state troopers surrounded the Brown Drive home of the man, Robert Carver, 73, and called him by telephone to order him out of his house. He surrendered without incident, according to an email from Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols.
Earlier Friday, Carver’s wife had gone to the Rumford Police Department and reported that she had been strangled by her husband, Nichols said. She told the police that Carver was very intoxicated, had access to a loaded shotgun and a handgun in the bedroom and told her that “he had a plan just in case she left,” Nichols said.
Carver’s bail was set at $1,000 cash or a Maine Pretrial Services contract.
In 2012, Maine law was changed to add strangulation, defined as cutting off breath or blood flow by applying pressure to the throat, as one of the ways to demonstrate extreme indifference to the value of human life and be charged with aggravated assault. Aggravated assault is a class B felony that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of incarceration.
Carver was charged with three felonies: class B aggravated assault, class C domestic violence terrorizing and class C domestic violence criminal threatening.
