FAIRFIELD — Voters in School Administrative District 49 will meet Thursday night to consider whether to approve a revised $25.4 million school budget proposed by the school board.

Voters at the budget meeting will decide the final amount that will be voted on in a districtwide ballot referendum scheduled for Tuesday.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Junior High School Gymnasium in Fairfield. Voters can make motions to add or remove money from the 11 budget warrant articles, according to Shelley Rudnicki, the school board’s vice chairwoman.

The revised budget includes almost $427,700 in cuts made by the school board after voters rejected its original $25.9 million budget in a May 19 referendum. The revised budget is about 1.4 percent larger than last year’s spending plan.

SAD 49 includes the towns of Fairfield, Albion, Benton and Clinton.

Cuts made by the board include $142,000 from facilities maintenance, $93,000 from transportation and $75,000 from special education. The cuts will mean that three to four positions will not be filled after current employees retire this year.

The board also cut more than $78,000 from administrative budgets, eliminating the equivalent of one full-time administrator, and made a $38,500 across-the-board cut to funding for extracurricular activities such as athletics, drama and music programs.
