Deputy Chief Jared Mills said Officer Benjamin Murtiff was responding to a report of a person experiencing a mental health problem. Murtiff, who had activated his cruiser’s lights and sirens, entered the intersection and was struck by a vehicle on Route 3. Both vehicles sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported. State police are investigating the crash, which is Augusta’s standard procedure for a crash involving one of its cruisers.
