Longtime college administrator Stuart Swain has been named acting president of the University of Maine at Machias, university system officials announced Monday.

Swain, who has been provost and vice president of academic affairs at UMaine Machias since 2005, replaces Joyce Hedlund, who has been acting president at the roughly 900-student campus since December 2014.

Swain has been serving as president temporarily since October, when Hedlund underwent heart surgery. She expected to return as acting president, but instead has resigned effective Friday, Chancellor James Page said Monday.

Officials said it had not been determined how long Hedlund would serve as acting president. The system has not started a search for a permanent president, a process that can take about six months.

“It has been a great privilege connecting the people of Maine and the Downeast region to public higher education for nearly forty years,” Hedlund said. “While my focus now has to turn to my own recovery, I wish to thank the talented faculty and dedicated staff at the University of Maine at Machias for their hard work, their commitment to Washington County and their friendship.”
