A Maine State Police investigation continued Thursday into the death of a full-term baby boy found earlier this week in a garage next to a mobile home on Norridgewock Road in Fairfield.
The baby’s parents, Kayla Stewart and Nicholas Blood, were allowed to return to the mobile home Wednesday night after detectives completed a four-day search of the home and garage, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. No one answered the door at the home Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the medical examiner’s office still is testing the baby’s remains after completing an examination.
“Interviews continue, so does the testing by the medical examiner, and the investigation continues,” McCausland said Thursday afternoon in an email.
Stewart, 20, and Blood, 25, have lived at the mobile home at 457 Norridgewock Road with their 3-year-old daughter, police said. McCausland said on Wednesday, while the search was being conducted, that the child was staying with relatives. He said the couple was cooperating in the investigation and no charges have been filed.
Detectives were called to the home Sunday night and on Monday discovered what McCausland initially described as “remains from a recent pregnancy.” He would not say why detectives originally were called to the home.
The baby’s remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit searched the home and unattached garage Tuesday, as well as two cars parked in the driveway.
On Wednesday, McCausland announced that the remains were those of a full-term baby boy.
According to neighbors, Stewart and Blood and their daughter moved into the light blue mobile home five or six months ago. The home is on busy Norridgewock Road, which also is Route 139.
