Maine School Administrative District 11 announced changes to its calendar Monday to comply with state law because of the number of snow days this year.

During this month’s school board meeting, the board voted to extend each school day by one hour during the week of May 9, adding the equivalent of one school day. To comply with state law, all students must attend a minimum of 175 days and seniors must attend 170 days.

The district serves Gardiner, Pittston, Randolph and West Gardiner.

Because of the change, the last day for students will be Friday, June 17, which will be a half-day. High school graduation will remain Saturday, June 11.

The change affects the May 11 early-release day. Gardiner Area High School and Gardiner Regional Middle School students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, and elementary students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

The district’s superintendent, Patricia Hopkins, said schools will be flexible and accommodating to families during the week of May 9 if a child needs to be dismissed early for a previous appointment or commitment.

Earlier this month, Augusta announced that it was extending the school day an extra hour on May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 to make up for cancellations.
