Six of the 18 people who were arrested during a protest on Commercial Street last month waived their arraignment in Cumberland County Unified Court on Thursday.
Jenessa Hayden, Caitlin Vaughan, Kennedy Johnson, Shadiyo Hussain Ali, Mariano Angelo and Sarah Lazare all are represented by different attorneys. They are next scheduled to appear in court for a dispositional conference in October.
They are the first of the 18 people arrested whose cases have reached court; all have been charged with one count of obstructing a public way. The protesters blocked a busy section of Commercial Street late into the night on July 15 to denounce police violence against minorities.
All but one of the remaining adult protesters are scheduled to make their first court appearance Thursday. One other protester is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 8. There was one minor who was arrested at the demonstration, whose name has not been released and whose case will be handled in juvenile court and not be public because the charge of obstructing a public way is not a felony.
