WATERVILLE — A 22-year-old man was arrested Sunday on a felony charge after allegedly attempting to assault a man in a car over the weekend, injuring the driver in the process, police said.

Zachary Ricker, of Benton, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault, a Class B felony, on Sunday at 6:50 p.m. after police called to ask him to turn himself in.

On Friday, Dec. 2, at 4:20 p.m., a woman and man, who police later confirmed to be mother and son, drove to Quarry Road in Waterville to buy medical marijuana, according to Deputy Chief Bill Bonney. The man has a medical marijuana card.

But instead of finding their expected contact, Ricker allegedly showed up and began to threaten the man, who was sitting in the passenger seat with the window up. The pair told police Ricker said, “You’ve got my money.”

Then Ricker allegedly tried to strike the man with the barrel of a shotgun through the open window on the driver’s side. Instead, he struck the woman, lacerating her hand, according to Bonney, who didn’t know whether the woman went to the hospital for her injury.

After the assault, the woman allegedly began to drive off, but Ricker clung onto the car for about 100 feet. Police say he wasn’t injured from the incident.

Bonney said police don’t know the reasons behind the alleged assault.

Ricker was being held at Kennebec County jail in Augusta on $5,000 cash bail and is scheduled to appear in Augusta court on Jan. 23.
