WALDOBORO — A Waldoboro native with a private law practice announced Friday she will seek the Democratic nomination for district attorney for the region stretching from Bath to Belfast.
Natasha Irving of Waldoboro said she is seeking the top regional prosecutorial job to change the district’s policies on drug cases. The district covers Knox, Waldo, Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties.
The post is held by Jonathan Liberman, who was appointed to the post in early May by Gov. Paul LePage. Liberman succeeded longtime District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau, who resigned in May when he was confirmed as a District Court judge.
Liberman, a Republican from West Bath, has filed a notice to run for the post in 2018. Liberman served as deputy district attorney from July 2016 until his appointment as district attorney. From May 2011 until July 2016, he served as assistant district attorney for the region.
No other candidates have announced a run for the office. The parties will hold their primary elections in June 2018 with the general election in November 2018. Party candidates have until March 15 to file nomination papers, while candidates not enrolled in a party have until June 1 to file.
Irving said she is running “to change policies of the district that have failed Mainers with addiction, and allocated precious resources away from prosecuting serious offenses.” She said she plans to refocus policy to get Mainers with addiction into medical treatment, not prison or jail, and direct resources toward prosecuting violent and sexual offenses.
