BENTON — Officials deemed a single-family home in Benton a total loss after it caught fire Friday morning.
The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined, according to Duane Bickford, chief of Fairfield and Benton Fire and Rescue. Bickford said there was no reason to believe the fire was suspicious, but it is still under investigation.
The two people who reside at the Clinton Avenue home were not there at the time of the fire. The residents had insurance on the house and have been contacted by the American Red Cross.
The department received the call reporting smoke and flames showing at the property at 10:26 a.m.
Waterville, Winslow and Albion sent crews to the scene, and Skowhegan responded with a rapid intervention team. Oakland covered the Fairfield station during the fire.
It took about four hours for the blaze to be extinguished.
