PITTSFIELD — Alan Caron, an independent candidate for governor, will lead a discussion on building lasting prosperity in rural Maine from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House of Pittsfield, 112 Easy St.

Caron has been involved in these discussions for the better part of four decades. In 2002, he founded Grow Smart Maine, a nonprofit organization focused on building Maine’s economy without sacrificing the quality of life that defines Maine. In 2009, Caron shifted his focus to supporting entrepreneurs, innovators, visionaries and doers to accelerate the growth of Maine’s next economy through the creation of Envision Maine, according to a news release from the office of Caron for Governor.

Caron also facilitated the Brooking Institute’s publication Charting Maine’s Future, which concludes that Maine must support the state’s outstanding quality of place and most promising industrial clusters while also streamlining government to free up resources.

The event begins with socializing and light refreshments. The talk will begin at 6 p.m. and there will be time to listen to the public and gather ideas for strengthening Maine’s rural communities.
