The foundation of horror writer Stephen King has awarded a $50,000 grant that will be used to benefit a books and literacy program in Portland elementary schools.
The Portland Education Foundation announced Tuesday that it will receive the grant from The Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation. Spokeswoman Kate Snyder said Portland public schools’ Books and Literacy Resources program will benefit from the award. The $50,000 also will be used to build book collections that honor and celebrate culture and language differences.
“We know that students benefit greatly from having a variety of reading materials at different levels and genres. We rarely have the opportunity to make this level of investment in classroom libraries,” Superintendent of Schools Xavier Botana said in a statement. “We are very grateful to The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation for their generous gift.”
