Former Portland chef Jason Daly will compete on the Food Network show “Chopped” on May 29 at 9 p.m.
Daly’s episode, titled “Surf and Turf,” features “some expensive and obscure proteins from both land and sea,” according to a press release.
Daly was the executive chef at Crooners & Cocktails, which closed in February, and he has also worked at Salt Restaurant on Vinalhaven Island. He is now at Warehouse Bar and Kitchen in Charleston, South Carolina, but he showcases Maine produce and seafood in his Chopped episode.
Chef contestants on “Chopped” are given mystery baskets of ingredients to create an original dish for a panel of judges in a limited time. Each episode features an appetizer, an entree and a dessert. The chef whose dish isn’t quite up to the judges’ standards gets “chopped” from the competition after each round, until the chef left standing wins $10,000.
A number of Maine chefs have competed on Chopped over the years, including Dysart’s Shaun Yazbek, Duckfat’s Rob Evans (twice, he won the first time) and Christian Hayes of Dandelion Catering Co. (he won, too).
