HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY: Rivals set for cancer game
The Drive Out Cancer Challenge began as a game between the Cony and Gardiner field hockey teams five years ago and blossomed into a series of games between sports teams at the rival high schools — all to raise awareness of the disease and benefit the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in Augusta.

The Waterville girls soccer team was expected to be one of the teams to beat this season as it dropped from Class A to Class B. The Purple Panthers return nine players from last year’s tournament team and have added a prolific scorer in junior Pilar Elias who transferred from Winslow.

Monmouth Academy’s Kylie Kemp has been one of the top three-sport athletes at the school, beginning four years ago as a freshman. The senior striker is closing in on the school girls soccer career goal-scoring record of 61 set by Faith Flannery in the mid-to late 1990s.
