AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Due to low numbers, Waterville will not field Legion team
WATERVILLE — Although few teams ever have that many for a given game, American Legion Baseball teams can field rosters with as many as 18 players. When Waterville held Legion tryouts a couple weeks ago, coach Eli Fitzgerald realized he would be lucky to get half that.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: Skowhegan has depth
Shelby Obert went 5 for 5 in one game. Mikayla Toth had that game when she had a double and a triple. Earlier this week, Bonnie-Jane Aiken had a single and a double in the same inning. Emma Fitzgerald had two singles in that same game. Then there was the game where Kaitlyn Therriault had three hits.

WATERVILLE — Less than five minutes to play in Colby College’s NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse first-round tournament game Wednesday night. Colby senior Lisa Hoopes gets a pass from Tess Petesch, shoots, and scores. Hoopes screams, raises both arms in the air, and hugs the first teammate she sees.

WINSLOW — Gardiner hasn’t won any softball games by the mercy rule this season, but that’s about the only thing the Tigers haven’t done this season. The Tigers remained unbeaten Wednesday, showcasing their speed, aggressiveness, pitching and defense.

COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Colby women’s lacrosse makes it into NCAA tournament
In the most recent Division III national rankings for women’s lacrosse, Colby College was seventh overall. The Mules were coming off an 11-10 conference tournament loss to Middlebury, a team ranked third in the country.
