HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY NOTEBOOK: Short-handed Panthers start strong
Waterville is playing with 12 field hockey players, although that number could increase to 14 in the near future. When the Purple Panthers beat Camden Hills on Monday, they used the same 11 players for the entire game.

HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY NOTEBOOK: Oak Hill enjoying success
For years, Oak Hill has faced the challenge of building its program and keeping players interested, while at the same time being too far below the established teams in Class B to be competitive. This year, the Raiders are still in Western B, but they have moved to the Mountain Valley Conference, and most of their schedule is against Class C teams.

It says something about Nicole Guimond that she’s playing a new position this fall. After three years as a right midfielder for the St. Anselm College field hockey team, the Fairfield native and Lawrence High School grad is playing center midfielder this season.

COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Terriers finally get 1st win of season
The Thomas women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season Sunday against UMaine-Machias. The Terriers tried several different formations over the first three games and came close to that first win two other times. Thomas lost 1-0 to Regis on a goal in the 65th minute, and rallied from a 2-0 deficit against Southern Maine before falling in overtime.

OAKLAND — Makaela Michonski’s most spectacular goal Saturday afternoon was the one she plucked out of the air and deflected into the corner of the cage. The most damaging was the one two and a half minutes into the game, or maybe it was the other one she scored in the first half.

Weather permitting, Skowhegan and Messalonskee will have their first regular-season meeting at 2 p.m., Saturday in Oakland. The Indians and the Eagles have played each other in the Eastern A field hockey final in each of the last four years.
