Travis Lazarczyk has covered sports for the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal since 2000. A Vermont native, he graduated from the University of Maine in 1995 with a BA in English. After a few years working as a sports information director and in the ski industry, he began his journalism career at the Berlin (N.H.) Reporter in 1999. Over the years, Lazarczyk has been honored with numerous state, regional, and national awards for his work, including a first place for column writing from the Associated Press Sports Editors in 2011, and inclusion in Notable Sports Writing of 2009 in Best American Sports Writing. When not working, he can be found, reading, hiking, or drinking too much coffee.

After close loss upon close loss, the Messalonskee High School boys basketball team earned a pair of big wins this past week. With victories over Lawrence and Brewer the Eagles jumped from 10th place in the Eastern A standings and out of the playoffs all the way to sixth and back into the tournament field.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mt. Blue’s Kendall in line for award
When the Mt. Blue High School football team played at Gardiner in the regular season, Gardiner quarterback Dennis Meehan had some success running to the side patrolled by Mt. Blue defensive end Zak Kendall. When the teams met for a rematch in the Pine Tree Conference Class B semifinals, Kendall was ready.

PITTSFIELD — On Friday night, the Winslow High School boys basketball team won its 10th consecutive game, taking a 64-41 win at Maine Central Institute. The game was a display of everything that the Black Raiders have done well this season. They attacked the Huskies with a balanced offense and were relentless on defense, forcing 30 MCI turnovers.
