Travis Lazarczyk has covered sports for the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal since 2000. A Vermont native, he graduated from the University of Maine in 1995 with a BA in English. After a few years working as a sports information director and in the ski industry, he began his journalism career at the Berlin (N.H.) Reporter in 1999. Over the years, Lazarczyk has been honored with numerous state, regional, and national awards for his work, including a first place for column writing from the Associated Press Sports Editors in 2011, and inclusion in Notable Sports Writing of 2009 in Best American Sports Writing. When not working, he can be found, reading, hiking, or drinking too much coffee.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Mules ready for CBB
The Colby-Bates-Bowdoin rivalry kicks off this weekend when Colby College plays at Bates. The series ended in a three-way tie last season, the fourth three-way tie since 1979, and the second in three years. With the tie, the trophy remained with Bowdoin, which won the title in 2010.

WATERVILLE — It’s been five years since the Mt. Blue High School girls soccer team won a playoff game. That made the Cougars 3-1 win over Waterville in the Eastern Class A quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon sweet. That the win came against a team the Cougars have struggled against for years made the smiles on the faces of the Mt. Blue players a little wider.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Winslow surprised by top seed
Winslow High School head coach Mike Siviski was pleasantly surprised when his team earned the top spot in the Campbell Conference Class C playoffs. The Black Raiders finished the regular season at 7-1 and tied with Oak Hill in the Crabtree Point standings, but Winslow’s win over Oak Hill gave the Black Raiders the nod.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: A lot at stake for Bulldogs, Dragons
Tonight’s Pine Tree Conference Class A game between Lawrence (7-0) and Brunswick (6-1) could be a playoff preview. That would suit Brunswick just fine. The last two times the Dragons and the Bulldogs met in the playoffs, the Dragons came away with a win.
