Travis Lazarczyk has covered sports for the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal since 2000. A Vermont native, he graduated from the University of Maine in 1995 with a BA in English. After a few years working as a sports information director and in the ski industry, he began his journalism career at the Berlin (N.H.) Reporter in 1999. Over the years, Lazarczyk has been honored with numerous state, regional, and national awards for his work, including a first place for column writing from the Associated Press Sports Editors in 2011, and inclusion in Notable Sports Writing of 2009 in Best American Sports Writing. When not working, he can be found, reading, hiking, or drinking too much coffee.

OAKLAND — Neither the Messalonskee nor the Cony high school football teams are going to look back at Friday night’s season opener as a masterpiece. Each team came away knowing it has things to improve. But a defensive stand late in the fourth quarter, followed by a big fourth down conversion, gave Messalonskee a 21-19 win at Veterans Field.

AUGUSTA — The Scot Laliberte Invitational has become a showcase for some of the best cross country runners in the state. This year’s race will see two new winners. Last year’s girls winner, Erzsie Nagy of Lawrence, will miss the race due to injury, and last year’s boys winner, Harlow Ladd of Messalonskee, graduated and moved on to Purdue University.
