    Judge in Zimmerman trial limited race as factor

    On the Opinion pages, John Benoit (letter, Saturday, July 20) and Charles Krauthammer (column, Sunday, July 21) observe that the trial of George Zimmerman was not about race. But, they omit an important fact that Judge Debra Nelson severely limited racial bias in the trial by preventing prosecutors from mentioning racial profiling.

    Stories on aging highlight issue that needs attention

    My hat's off to the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel for doing such a great comprehensive job in reporting the struggle of Maine's elderly and Department of Health and Human Services' failure to implement an effective plan to meet the mounting need.

    Bowen made right call on Miss Maine USA hire

    Kudos to Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen for recognizing how inappropriate it would be to hire Ms. Maine USA Ashley Marble as spokesperson for CTE programs. According to a newspaper story, several years ago Gov. Paul LePage wanted to hire Marble after having lunch with her.

    A disapproving look from a judge, a paltry fine, perhaps a couple of hours in jail, maybe some community service -- these are not the answer to folks like James Wiggins, of Fairfield.

    Story of Bella’s suffering was heart-wrenching

    The story of Bella in the July 19 issue of the Morning Sentinel has left my husband and me heartsick. We cannot believe how any human being could abuse a poor trusting animal the way James Wiggins allegedly treated his dog. It is heart-wrenching to think of the pain and suffering that Bella endured. Our sincere hope is that the judge will find Wiggins a cruel and heartless person. In this case, we say an eye for an eye!

    Davis abortion column was classic doublespeak

    On July 18, the newspaper published a commentary by Texas Sen. Wendy Davis regarding that state's state law banning abortions after 20 weeks, requiring women's clinics to meet levels of safety and requiring abortionists to have hospital admitting privileges. Her commentary was a classic example of doublespeak.

    Health care for ‘the least’ exemplifies Christian way

    The central issue of Obamacare approval is the belief in the common good. If American health care delivery to all of our citizens is to succeed, this involves the belief that everyone, including those who are young and healthy, see themselves as part of caring for the common good of all.
