Lockman’s op ed insulting to Cony students
Rep. Lawrence Lockman, R-Amherst, recently wrote an op ed in this newspaper criticizing the Cony Student Council for creating its own "report card" for Augusta's high school. His column was intimidating, mean-spirited and inappropriate.

Medicaid expansion creates jobs, too
Tax increment financing lures business to an area with tax breaks paid for by taxpayers. It is justified as a way to create jobs. Meanwhile, the expansion of Medicaid to pay medical costs of poor Mainers will bring 3,000 jobs to Maine with no cost -- the equivalent of building a new Bath Iron Works. How can people who support economic development programs like tax increment financing not support the Medicaid expansion?

Mainers have already paid a lot for state employees
Since 2009 some of the most utilized tools for the Legislature to balance state budgets were to freeze merit and longevity pay for state employees and make those employees pay more of their health insurance costs.

Cutting drug program would be ‘devastating’
Many older Mainers are struggling with the rising costs of food, health care and basic, everyday expenses. Imagine not having money to heat your home in the winter. Imagine having to choose between food and life-saving medication. Maine's Drugs for the Elderly program (DEL) helps pay for prescription drugs for low-income Mainers who are 62 or older and not yet eligible for Medicare. The proposed elimination of the DEL to help balance Maine's budget will be nothing short of devastating to the 80,000 individuals in the program. The state has alternatives. At-risk seniors and the disabled do not.

A charter by definition is a formal written statement describing the rights and responsibilities of a group. It further states the aims, principles and procedures of the organization.
