LePage needs education about education
As a retired teacher of 27 years, I feel I must address what is happening in our state government. We have a governor who is a bully, and he is leading the lemmings in the Legislature straight off a cliff as fast as he can, pulling the rest of the state over with him. Like any other bully, Gov. Paul LePage must have a supportive audience in order to succeed. The Republican members in the Legislature have again reversed their votes in order to support the governor's veto of bills that could have brought benefits to our state. Shame on you, legislators!

Food stamps limits already cause problems
Politicians are trying to stop individuals from buying "junk food and soft drinks." (Food stamps, junk food ban backers say it will fight obesity, May 4).

Medicaid bill veto misses the point
By vetoing the bill to accept 100 percent funded federal Medicaid dollars because it was attached to cash settlement with hospitals, it seems like the governor has thrown out the proverbial baby with the bath water.

For-profit prisons study funded by vested interest
In a May 23 Maine Compass, Temple University professors Simon Hakim and Erwin Blackstone discussed their recent research that found cost savings and equal or better performance by for-profit prison companies. Based upon their research findings they suggested the state consider prison privatization.

Big thanks to everyone who donated to food drive
I would like to thank everyone in the greater Waterville area who put non-perishable foods out for the post office food drive a couple of weeks ago. The community was very generous and the Evening Sandwich Program soup kitchen was the recipient of lots of wonderful food. It means so much to us to know that people care. We also thank the postal workers who carried and sorted the tons of food they collected. We appreciate it!

No food stamps until other avenues exhausted
I think that many complainants are missing the point about regulatory changes currently being considered to the food stamp program. I am not a legislator; however, I have real concerns about the food stamp and Medicaid programs, too. My husband and I raised five daughters. We both worked and fortunately had health and dental insurance for our family, but there were co-pays and deductibles, and household bills, bills, bills. We had to make choices about what we could afford to have and still get our bills paid. We skipped costly snacks, brand name groceries and clothes, did not go to the doctor (never the ER) at the drop of a hat, and some of our girls really needed braces, but we could not afford the payments. We bought no tattoos or false fingernails, and my kids had to live through less-than-stylish home-made haircuts. Our means were limited, and we lived judiciously.
